Council Best Practice

Research on world best practices for shippers/logistics councils indicates that every economy of note should have a shippers/logistics council, with a full time secretariat, that affiliates with regional and global councils. In line with this research, and using the success of the Maputo Corridor Logistics Initiative as a benchmark, SASTALC seeks to follow a similar transformational path.

This research has also indicated that world best practice for similar councils is to have a full time, well-resourced secretariat and full time office with a revenue stream of around 50% from membership fees and 50% from services, such as training, capacity building and career development; knowledge hub; conferences, membership services, consulting and other such revenue generating services.

In order to develop this full time team to get to a point of sufficient memberships and revenue generating services, seed funding has to be sought for the establishment and development of such a model. To experience substantial membership growth, there has to be a sustainable concrete membership value proposition that will make the council the representative body of choice within the industry. In order to get there a seed funding proposal has been given to TRANSNET, which is receiving their communicated favourable consideration.

Research done during 2014 across 60+ councils reflected similar, visions, missions and a full time office and secretariat.
