On the occasion of the 3rd Session of South Africa-Vietnam Joint Trade Committee, H.E. Mr. Le Huy Hoang, Ambassador of Vietnam and H.E. Mr. Do Thang Hai, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Industry & Trade would like to invite you to business engagement followed by a luncheon, with a visiting Vietnamese Business Delegation. The purpose of this meeting is to explore and discuss potential business opportunities between Vietnam and South Africa. This will include the promotion of bilateral trade in coals, timbers, agricultural, industry and other products as well as for investment cooperation in the areas of mining, steel, power plants, industrial defence, infrastructure developments and others.

2. TRANSNET FREIGHT RAIL REQUIREMENT TO PROVIDE VGM (VERIFIED GROSS MASS) OF ALL SEA EXPORT CONTAINERS

As from 1 July 2016, TFR as a transporter must obtain proof of sea export container weights for rail to a TPT port facility. TPT has already engaged with all its shipping line customers and all respective bodies. Customers working on average mass will not be allowed to do so as from 1 July 2016 and must provide verified proof of the mass loaded into a container.

TFR reviewed the requirements of SOLAS and has come to the conclusion that TFR is able to offer the service to provide the VGM for Method 1 to customers who make use of Transnet rail services for export containers railed from TFR terminals equipped with weighbridges READ MORE

3. OPERATION PHAKISA: OCEANS ECONOMY SEMINAR - EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES TOWARDS A NATIONAL MARITIME SECTOR CLUSTER

The Oceans Economy Secretariat is facilitating a Maritime Seminar, together with key departments and institutions, Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Environmental Affairs, Trade and Industry, Transport, Mineral Resources, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Tourism, Public Works and South African Maritime Safety Authority, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, South African International Maritime Institute and the Kingdom of Norway.

The Seminar will take place over two days, from 6 to 7 June 2016 and will be held in Port Elizabeth. The focus of the Seminar will be on the Maritime Cluster System and will draw on the experience of Norway in this regard.

It would be important for all role players within the maritime sector to attend and contribute this initiative.

The Department extends its sincerest apologies for sending this invitation at such short notice. A formal programme will be forwarded in due course.

4. GUIDELINES ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SOLAS VI REGULATION 2 AMENDMENT: VERIFICATION OF THE GROSS MASS OF PACKED CONTAINERS

The following amended marine notice, issued by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), provides guidance for the implementation of SOLAS Chapter VI Regulation 2 regarding the Verification of the Gross Mass of packed containers. It outlines the Republic of South Africa’s guidelines for the implementation of the mandatory amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Chapter VI, Part A, Regulation 2. The SOLAS requirements regarding the Verification of the Gross Mass of packed containers carrying cargo (SOLAS regulation VI/2) will enter into force in July 2016. Amendments to this marine notice include:

1. The implementation of an enforcement tolerance.

2. Containers that are loaded on a ship before 1 July 2016 and are transhipped on or after 1 July 2016. READ MORE
