Lourens van Niekerk -Director Maritime, Industry & Economic Development -DOT

“The department is building a relationship with SASTALC and the Transport Forum in which both Harry and Brenda have been called by the department on matters relevant to the industry. This is important in that it has opened a platform for the government to engage with the private sector and get first hand feedback regarding industry related issues, which previously wasn’t happening. Through such engagements and initiatives, the government is able to draft policies and framework that can contribute towards creating a business environment in which all can operate without feeling prejudiced or disadvantaged. There are a number of policies currently being developed across all modes oftransport as well ascorridor strategies. The most important of these is private sector engagement–which helps government in the effective delivery of all the plans and programs currently in place to help improve our transport systems in the country. The private sector is important not only as a source of capital, but also for the human capital and knowledge that comes with such developments. Government has realized that it cannot work independently of the stakeholder’s who are directly impacted by policies, and organizations such as SASTALC , in a very short space of time, have started narrowing the gap between government and the private sector, which is crucial in the government serving the citizens and tax payers of this country.Best wishes to the council, the board and members on this journey of strategic transformation.”
